What’s the Time, San Francisco?Clock

clockAlthough not traditionally linked to clocks, San Francisco does have a few clock-related news stories.   First, there is the story of the clock in the Ferry Building.  For almost 20 years, this is the clock that Dorian Clair has been taking care of.  It has been ticking (off time) since 1898 – the year of the opening of the Ferry Building.

For those who have a bit of extra spare cash in the neighborhood and have a thing for clocks, the penthouse at 641 Second Street, SoMa – home to the San Francisco’s Clock Tower – is up for grabs.  For a mere $8.5 million, nearly a century ago, this was an entire Clock Tower Building.  But in 1993 – like so many other relics of the hood – it was converted into 127 modern live-work lofts.  The modern David Baker design is quite different today from when it housed the Schmidt Lithograph Corporation.

Another famous clock that lives in San Francisco is the historic Magneta Grandfather Clock at the Westin St. Francis (which is the only hotel located on Union Square).  Listed in ‘One of the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die,’ this clock has been a meeting place for many years.

The Westin St. Francis is a destination where you can unwind and be pampered by attentive, world-class service. As the only hotel located on Union Square, we are celebrated for our historic Magneta Grandfather Clock, when one says “meet me at the clock,” it is to this clock to which they refer. Made in 1856 in Vienna, this archetypal timepiece, traveled by steamer ship around Cape Horn to San Francisco.  It got to its home in San Francisco for the reopening that took place in November of 1907.  It didn’t end its journey there though.  One day, out of the blue, in 2004, it just disappeared and clock lovers shed a tear.  But then four years later it was brought back to its original place!  It had never actually been taken per se, it was just sitting in the mezzanine and later the Tower Lobby, during restoration.

So, next time you’re in San Francisco and someone says “meet me by the clock,” you’ll know exactly where to go.
