Investments Into Green Technology Increase

Worldwide Venture Capital investments into the environmentally-friendly technology sector increased 52%, reaching $2.57 billion in just the first quarter of the year.

The climb was made public by Cleantech Group, a San Francisco-based research firm. According to the company’s CEO, Sheeraz Haji, the period was “the second highest quarter ever for Cleantech VC investment.”

Haji continued to explain that major investments were made throughout North America, Europe, China and India. The findings were supported by “a rash of large later-stage deals” during the first few months of the year.

Patricia Splinter, chief operating officer and managing director at VantagePoint Venture Partners, explained that the trend emphasizes the maturing industry. Last year, her investment firm launched a $100 million cleantech fund.

Haji believes the investments show a recognition of the fact that green technology is a legitimate business. “It’s encouraging to see some big private equity firms entering the space, and continued strength with mergers and acquisitions,” he said.
