Michelin Star Awards in Northern California

Michelin San Francisco GuideMichelin has recently released the 2011 guide of San Francisco, the Bay Area and Wine Country. The Michelin Guide was originally just a small book distributed in France to travelers free of charge, which aimed to make journeys easier and more pleasant. Now, the Michelin Guides are comprised of 25 guides which cover over 23 countries, and are considered to be a standard of gourmet dining.

This year, Michelin has awarded The Restaurant at Meadowood with its highest rating of 3 stars. French Laundry is the only other restaurant in the region with 3 stars. Manresa, Coi and Cyrus all held their 2-star status. 11 restaurants were given their first stars, which brings the number of 1-star establishments in Northern California to 39. 74 restaurants were deemed ‘Bib Gourmands’, establishments which provide good food for reasonable prices, 29 of them being newly identified.
The Northern California region was described as being “quite simply one of the finest culinary regions in the world” by Jean-Luc Naret, the current director of Michelin.
