No More Happy Meals for ‘Cisco Kids

The San Francisco board of advisers has voted to ban most Happy Meals as they are presently sold in fast food restaurants. They have set levels of sugar, fat and calories which are allowed to be accompanied by a free toy, and any meal with a higher amount – is now served toy-less. All meals that do include a toy are required to come with fruits and vegetables as well. San Francisco is the first significant city in the US to take such measures against child obesity.

Supervisor Eric Mar explained that “From San Francisco to New York City, the epidemic of childhood obesity in this country is making our kids sick, particularly kids from low income neighborhoods, at an alarming rate. It’s a survival issue and a day-to-day issue.”

There have been mixed responses to this ban. Danya Proud, the spokeswoman of McDonald’s, stated that they are disappointed with the decision. They feel it is something that the customers did not want. The supporters of the ban feel like it is a big step in preventing child obesity, while the opponents peg it on San Francisco’s eccentric tendencies. Supervisor Bevan Dufty believes that “the industry is going to take note of this. I don’t care how much they say, ‘It’s San Francisco, they’re wacked out there.’ “
