Old Mandarin Islamic

San Francisco’s halal restaurant – the Old Mandarin Islamic – should feel a surge of pride.  French guide Michelin & Cie just recognized it for its food – good value and quality – with a Big Gourmand award for dishes such as tomato egg flower soup and mandarin lamb. This organization is the second largest tiremaker in the world and put out its first guide in 1900, which, at the time, was intended for chauffeurs and included tire-repair tips and street maps. It will appear in the 2013 San Francisco Guide, which notifies those in the food business if they have won stars.  The Value-for-Money Category recognizes eateries which offer two courses and a glass of wine/dessert for up to $40 (including tip and tax).  All in all, 21 cuisines from the Bay area and wine country were recognized in this one.

Other eateries recognized included: Comal – Mexican cuisine; Gajalee – Indian seafood; and Marlowe – bistro.
