San Franciscan British Prepare for Royal Wedding

The biggest event of the decade is about to take place in London, and more than one billion people are projected to watch. Announced on November 16th of last year, the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton is expected to be as grand as the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Some of the guest celebrities include David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John, Kanye West and Guy Ritchie.

The wedding is to take place at Westminster Abbey, with Middleton spending the evening at the Goring Hotel and Prince William staying with his father at St. James Palace. Middleton is the first commoner to marry this close to the throne in 700 years, and her family was recently given its own coat of arms. Both the designer and the design of the wedding dress remain a secret, keeping fashionistas on the edge of their seats.

For dedicated royalists and British communities around the world, the time difference is irrelevant. In San Francisco, there are even some public celebrations planned, including the special Royal Wedding Tea Party Menu that will be offered at the Crown & Crumpet in Ghirardelli Square.

Sara Leask is a British transplant living in the Bay Area. She, along with her sister, is planning an extravagant party in the city.

“I’m not excited about getting up at 3 a.m.,” she says, “but there’s a whole load of British people coming together and we’re having a typical British dinner. The Royal Family are our history. I remember Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding, and for me the excitement is just the same- just a few years later.”
