San Francisco to Be Fossil Fuel-less

By the end of this month, San Francisco’s last fossil-fueled power plant Potrero Hill will be shut down. This issue has been debated by political parties and health services for many years. The plant is fueled by diesel and natural gases, as is considered one of the dirtiest in the state. The city’s southeast neighborhoods claim that the plant is responsible for higher rates of both asthma and cancer in the area.

The facility has been kept running because the city requires large amounts of back-up power for events such as earthquakes. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. recently installed a cable under San Francisco Bay, though, and so the California Independent System Operator released the Potrero Hill from its contract.
