San Francisco Recycles Christmas Trees

Christmas-treeCutting down trees for Christmas is not the most environmentally-friendly activity, but the residents of San Francisco are doing their best to compensate for the damage. They will be leaving their trees, minus the ornaments and decorations, by their curbs early in the morning on weekends between January 3rd and January 14th.

This is the 24th year that the trees will be shaved down to chips, and used in a waste-to-energy plant as biomass fuel. The fuel is generally used to generate electricity by heating water and creating steam.

“Environmentally speaking, it’s better not to cut down trees to begin with,” stated Bob Besso, a manager at Recology. “But if you do, then it’s better to recycle it through this program.”
