San Jose Bans Plastic Bags

Plastic-bagsSan Jose, following in the footsteps of San Francisco, has just become the largest city in the U.S. to ban plastic bags, in an effort to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable ones. The ordinance was approved after two years of study on a 10-1 vote, and goes into effect until 2012. Once begun, retailers will be forbidden to provide disposable plastic bags at the checkout, and will be required to charge for paper bags.

Councilman Sam Liccardo said “this is a great step. It’s an opportunity to lead on an important environmental issue.” The lone dissenter Councilman Pete Constant feels that the council has “increased the burden and cost for people in the midst of one of the deepest recessions we’ve experienced in our lifetime.”
