Vacation Rentals Explode in San Francisco

With summer vacation at its peak, hotels and rentals all over the US are filled to bursting.

According to the Bay Citizen, new vacation rentals are popping up all over San Francisco. The new trend is turning private residences into makeshift rentals during vacation months.

Ted Gullicksen of the tenants union calls it the “hotelization of San Francisco.” A recent count has found that there are currently 5,564 vacation homes in San Francisco, and increase from 3,764 which were counted several years ago. Websites such as Airbnb and VRBO have added to this industry as well.

“They are taking away from the city’s affordable housing stock and the amount of units available for permanent residents,” explained Christine Haw of the San Francisco Planning Department.

Gullicksen agrees, adding that “Seniors, families and low-income tenants are being pushed out. We have to fight for every affordable unit.”
